Self Publishing Tips

Yesterday I gave a talk to 20 or so undergraduate students, doing the very same course I did at Swindon College. It was so lovely to go back, and also to have the opportunity to think over how much I've achieved, and how much my work has evolved in the last 18 months.

While I was preparing the talk, I also drew this little comic for Zine Appreciation Week over on the blog My Girl Thursday (which happened last week). There are some fantastic reviews and freebies from a lot of interesting creators to read through, but I thought I'd also share my self publishing tips here in case you missed them.

The tips are based on my 8 months' experience creating and distributing The Green Bean......its been a sharp learning curve but I think I can conclude that my zine's first year has been a successful one. Hopefully sharing how I made it happen might be helpful to any other aspiring zinesters out there to make a start.

I just received my zines today ( all 8 of them!)
I enjoy the first one with a cup of maroccan mint tea, in my kitchen, in Norway. Outside is -12 C, which is not that bad, I`m listening to the fire in the oven and kosmos 93,6 fm ( a greek radiostation on the internet with amazing music from all over the world).
Life is good. Thank you Katie Green!

Hehe, I particularly like number 6. Paper is a complex thing, not to mention the choosing of it can be such a time consuming task...

Thank you for this post. It's like a little beam of light in the post art degree void of "erm...now what??"

ps. I really quite adore your blog, and really appreciate that you share stuff like this :)

But all these suggestions are not enough....we need a little more consideration and RESPECT by distributors! REAL distributors!

Great tips. Love your comment about being FUSSY ABOUT PAPER...it's so true and people always look at me weird when I'm feeling up paper!
